Some of the fittest athletes in North Carolina competed in Athletic Lab’s Tri-City Fitness Challenge. The events were a grueling test of strength, skill and endurance. All competitors contested the first 3 challenges with the top 5 competitors advancing to a final ‘Winner takes all’ final round. Ben Sturgill of Wilmington and Heather Farmer of Cary took home first place. Athletic Lab’s Mike Young, Will Peterson, James Gold, and Jen Matthews competed with Mike and Jen taking 3rd places respectively.

We recently held one of the largest USA Weightlifting coaches certification courses in the history of the program. Seventy people turned out to learn how to coach and perform the Olympic Lifts. The Olympic lifts are both a training tool and a sport unto themselves (they’ve been contest at the Olympics since 1896). They are a great means of developing coordination, strength, power and flexibility. Athletic Lab has had a USA Weightlifting club for over a year that holds training sessions twice a week at 7pm. If you’re interested in learning the movements and / or training with our Olympic weightlifting club you can register HERE. For current members of our Scholastic training program or CrossFit / Performance Fitness programs that are interested please contact a staff member. Members with monthly unlimited plans are eligible to attend at no additional cost if they test out on basic lifting competencies.
Here are the first 3 Challenge Workouts for the Tri-City Fitness Challenge.
WOD 1: Olympic Lifts…. A) Clean and Jerk and B) Snatch.THREE attempts at your max for each lift and we will be following the weightlifting rules (we will explain in detail) and athletes will be able to warm-up and practice before stepping on the “platform”.

By popular demand, we are bringing back our Scholastic Select program for the fall. Athletes enrolled in our 8 week Scholastic Select summer program had unbelievable improvements in strength, speed, and power. The fall program will be a similar 8 week program where athletes follow a planned training system using best practices of strength and speed development. Our Scholastic Select program is designed for athletes who can commit to mandatory training sessions on a regular schedule for a duration of at least 6 weeks. By making a longer commitment and following a regular schedule, we are better able to plan training that progresses an athlete to their athletic peak.
The Scholastic Select program is PERFECT for off-season training
The regular and more frequent attendance provides us an opportunity to train our high school athletes with the same exacting progressions that is typically reserved for professionals and collegiate athletes. If you feel like you can make the commitment and are interested in the absolute best in athletic development, here are the details…
Why: Because regular and frequent attendance allows us to do our job better because we can plan a long term training progression. Athletes benefit by getting stronger, faster and more fit at NO ADDITIONAL COST. Who: Any athlete aged 12-18 looking for training without compromise to be faster, more powerful and better conditioned. What: The ultimate in sport performance training from the best sport performance training center in NC. Where: Athletic Lab’s new training center in Cary, NC. Our new location features an 11,000 square foot training hall, collegiate style weight room, and 50 yard sprint track. Date / Time: August 29th through October 21st (8 weeks). Classes are offered at 5pm on Mon, Wed, and Fri. Athletes may also attend any of our 11 other non-Select Scholastic sessions. How to Enroll: Sign up for either a Scholastic Monthly Unlimited training membership or a Seasonal Scholastic Unlimited training membership and contact us with your intent to enroll in the Select program. Athletes who are currently members can add the Select sessions at no additional cost if they can meet the attendance requirements.
