Due to the Memorial Day holiday normal class scheduling on Monday (May 31, 2010) will be canceled. Instead, we will be having an ‘open gym’ that is open too all clients between the hours of 8-9:30 am and 11 to 1pm. All athletes and clients are welcome to attend either of these sessions. Normal workout programming and supervision will be provided. This will be a great opportunity to meet some of the other athletes and clients who train at Athletic Lab that don’t train in your normal training time slot. Have a great weekend and please stop by for these special training sessions on Monday.
You wouldn’t go to a cardiologist who was a chain smoker would you? If you’re like most people, you recognize the importance of having a service provider who walks the walk and practices what he preaches. The same is no less true in fitness training and athletic development. The passion our staff has for fitness and training is made evident by our training results. In fact, each member of our staff has several facility records at Athletic Lab to go along with there education, experience and certifications.

This Friday, the Athletic Lab staff set up an expo tent at the Carolina Railhawks game against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Railhawks train at Athletic Lab for their speed, strength and quickness development. We had a pullup challenge at our expo which was a huge success. All comers who could meet or exceed our pullup challenge (6 for women, 12 for men) won a free Athletic Lab t-shirt…even Swoops, the Railhawks mascot got in on the action. Check us out at the next Railhawks game!
At Athletic Lab there is no weaker gender. We take pride in developing strong, confident and athletic women. Consider the following numbers:
We have 4 women who can do over 20 pullups (with 2 over 30 and a women’s record of 34)
We gave 6 women who can power clean more than their body weight (with a women’s record of 209 at a body weight of 160)
We have 5 women who deep squat more than 1.5 times their body weight (with three over double their body weight and a record of 352 lbs)
We have 2 women who can vertical jump over 28 inches
The best part is none of these women look manly or musclebound. On the contrary, they are models of fitness and athleticism. Our women lift weights and do exercises in a way that doesn’t make them bulky or masculine. They slim down where they want and build up where they want.
Ladies-

On Saturday we hosted the first Pole Flyers Invitational. Athletic Lab trained athletes Marlee Cadwell and Anna Wilson both took home lifetime personal bests. Almost 20 athletes competed in this USA Track & Field Sanctioned event held right in Athletic Lab. It was the first competitive event held in our facility but we look to host more pole vault competitions as well as Olympic weightlifting competitions. Thanks for all who participated and congratulations to the winners Audrey Diener and Tyler Ankarstran.
Our first client in our Performance Fitness class recently experienced something that I thought made for a great success story. This particular client came to Athletic Lab with little exposure to the type of training that we typically do in this class. And although he had been running several times a week, he was physically weak (his own admission!) and had an unfavorable body composition. So although he was light, he carried some excess body fat that he wanted to lose. He also wanted to get much stronger. This particular client has now been training at Athletic Lab for 6 months and has accomplished both goals. On his first day he couldn’t do a pullup and now he can do almost 20. His squat strength has gone up over 300%. There’s more but you get the point. Well, on a recent international business trip he had a funny experience (although not at the time) on his way back in to the U.S. When he handed his passport to the immigration agents they didn’t believe it was him because his appearance had changed so much from when the picture was taken. He had lost his chubby face and his skin was tighter. His neck and trap muscles were bigger and stronger. They sent him to a second agent who made him verify his identity with other forms of ID before letting him through. Do you want to become lean, strong and fit too? The Triangle region of NC is home to some of the most competitive soccer in the country. If you’re a player in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area who is looking to take their game to the next level by getting stronger, faster, and more fit then Athletic Lab is the only logical choice for you. Athletic Lab trains some of the best soccer players in the area, including the Carolina Railhawks. The Railhawks are consistently the fastest, quickest, and most enduring team on the field. The Railhawks had a choice of all the sport performance service providers in the area but they chose Athletic Lab to help them reach their soccer potential. Here’s what some of their players have had to say about their training at Athletic Lab:
Mike Young, the guy we’re working with, he’s just really good at just setting up the base, making sure we’re strong and quick, and all of our work there is focusing on our core. It’s not easy. I’m usually close to passing out, but it’ll be good once the 80th minute comes around during the season.
- Andriy Budnyy on his preseason training at Athletic Lab
That’s why I started working with Mike [Young], I wanted to get faster. Clearly, I’m the fastest guy on the team as anybody can see. I’m like lightning. I wanted to get stronger and once you get the kinks out and get your touches back, your feel stronger, fitter. You’re able to muscle guys off the ball, so that’s what I’m trying to incorporate this year. - Josh Gardner responds to what he did to prepare for the 2010 season
Mike Young, the trainer we’ve been working with at Athletic Lab, he’s brutal. He’s tough, but he’s great. I’m trying my best to think of excuses not to go today. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the worst. He almost killed me Tuesday. I got up out of bed and almost fell over. But he’s whipping us into shape for the season.
- Railhawk Captain, Mark Schulte responds to what he did to prepare for the 2010 season
Over the past 10 days, Athletic Lab trained athletes have excelled in a variety of athletic ventures:
The Carolina Railhawks professional soccer team won their season opener against St. Louis with a dominating 2-0 win.
Elite sprinter Alie Israel placed 7th at the prestigious Kansas Relays with a time of 24.16 for the 200 meters.
Scholastic training client and Panther Creek high school senior Cassie Crawford won the Bojangle’s Invitational girls pole vault and established a new North Carolina state record of 12’6”.
